Women Are Heroes by JR  |  Around the World

JR wanted to bring attention to women, who he says are often the primary victims of crime, rape, and war. He posted large photos of women's faces and eyes all over building and rooftops in Moro de Providencia in Brazil. These large images face the center of the city in an effort to portray women as central figures in their communities. In Kenya, images of womens faces and eyes cover rooftops. These projects bring women to the forefront in those cities, showing their idenity. Not only do they bring attention women, but the prints are made of water-resistant vinyl that protects the homes. In this way, art physically provides social change by protecting their homes from water damage. In Cambodia, women were they were facing expulsion from their land and their homes and were fighting this relocation the government was planning. The images portray their struggles and bring them to the government's attention.
